EFI Trouble

Postby dwjohnson » Fri Apr 12, 2013 2:23 pm

I'm having trouble with a friends street bike. It is an '02 EFI Softail. Cranks and runs fine like it should, up untill 50-60 % throttle. Then it starts breaking up really bad. Will not clear up unless you back off throttle. Can not drive thru it either, not even by downshifting. Any gear, any speed, seems related to throttle plate position. Motor is stock ECM, no add on boxes. Does have V&H straight shots and a Harley flash, from a long time ago.No recent changes to bike at all.
Any help or ideas???? We are working on a gage to check fuel pressure right now. Bike seems to be going lean to me, plugs are just too white.

If it was me I would have to call Billy at Lake Charles, LA H-D. Or someone like him.
I don't know Squat about electronically controlled anything...Including this "magic Box" I'm on right now!!!
Is a o2 sensor expensive?? Sounds like the position sensor is at least workin alittle...
So, I waste, er..Try, Your Money on the o2 sensor...

If it's rpm related you might want to start w/ a fuel filter, check screens on injectors. Could also be ignition side.

Wouldn't a MAP sensor throw us a code ? I may have forgot to mention, but we have no codes whatsoever.

Another long shot would be the vehicle speed sensor. Sounds dumb, but it shares power and ground w/ the MAP and a couple other sensors on some bikes. It can affect the other sensors w/o throwing a code.

yea, I think this one was the one that had a loose battery cable from the owner installing a new battery. Sorry, just seems to always be the simplist stuff.
